Precision Ventilation in an Open-Plan Office: A New Application of Active Chilled Beam (ACB) with a JetCone Feature

Mixing ventilation systems effectively improves thermal comfort in open-spaces due to adequate turbulent mixing of the cold stream with ambient air. This study introduces concept precision for achieving local a system. system provides asymmetrical airflows from an active chilled beam (ACB) each office occupants. These ACBs provide air velocities different magnitudes and directions. To achieve directions, JetCones are used vary airflow parts ACB. The performance was analyzed using full-scale laboratory experiments computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. were conducted 4.2 m × 3 2.8 (L W H) isolated room open-plan dual desk-chair setup. jet-cones ACB unit adjusted throw required amount flow occupants had metabolic rates 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 warm space. set point temperatures varied between 23 26 °C. experimental CFD results show that facing symmetrical distribution constant 1.2 rate similar PMV index. exposed airflows, i.e., 30%, 58%, 70% total airflow. Occupants higher kept thermally neutral, −0.5 +0.5 range, by increasing velocity temperature 0.4 m/s 25 °C, respectively.
